# Joshimath — Threatened Town Joshimath (1,875 m) in Chamoli district is the base for Badrinath and Auli, the winter seat of the Badrinath deity, and one of the four Shankaracharya Mathas. But since January 2023, it has become a symbol of the terrible cost of unplanned development in fragile Himalayan terrain: hundreds of houses developed widening cracks and large sections of the town became unsafe for habitation. Scientists identified multiple overlapping causes — an ancient landslide deposit foundation, hydroelectric tunnelling, unregulated construction, and inadequate drainage.
